Pacific Teleports announced today the commissioning of their US Point of Presence (POP) in Hawaii. Pacific Teleports Directors, Andrew Taylor and Steffen Holzt stated that they were very exited about this installation since for the first time in history affordable Internet connectivity can be provided into very small Satellite dishes to all of the Pacific Islands Countries. This is a major step forward for the Pacific IT neighbourhood and interest from the IT community has been overwhelming, they said.
Located at the Kapolei facility in Hawaii, the POP provides access to the US Internet backbone via the GE-23 satellite over the entire Pacific Ocean area into satellite dishes as small as 1.2 meters in diameter. The installation was made possible because of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community RICS project which enabled the substantial investment into the Hawaii infrastructure.
Operating combined with a Gilat Skyedge hub at Ku-band, the POP not only delivers Internet services but also MPEG4 audio/video transmissions to individual sites, thus allowing TV/Radio programs, or educational services to be played out on demand.
